  • A study of oral hygiene habits carried out in the Netherlands by Hamilton and the DENTAID Research Center finds that 58% of the population consulted does not clean between their teeth on a daily basis.
  • Lack of oral hygiene can cause the onset of gum disease, which may have negative consequences in other parts of the body.

Barcelona, 23 November 2022 - A recent study of oral hygiene habits carried out in the Netherlands by Hamilton and the DENTAID Research Center finds that 58% of the population consulted does not clean between their teeth daily, and only performs toothbrushing. Lack of interdental hygiene can negatively affect the health of teeth and gums and general health.

Despite the fact that this study shows that there has been a slight positive evolution in the last three years in the importance of integrating interdental care into the daily oral hygiene routine, global awareness of this habit still has a long way to go. In this sense, a recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) emphasises the important role prevention and care of the oral cavity play for maintaining a healthy mouth. In addition, it highlights the close association that exists between some periodontal diseases and cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Many oral diseases or conditions, such as caries, gum disease or tooth loss, are caused by a lack of interdental hygiene. Gum diseases are among the most prevalent diseases in the world: 80% of people over 35 years of age suffer from gingivitis or periodontitis. The latter can cause tooth loss and increase the risk of systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart complications or pregnancy complications, or worsen them, if they already exist.

Interdental hygiene, a healthy habit

Going to the dental clinic periodically and carrying out complete daily oral hygiene is the basis of good oral health. “It is essential to choose and use the appropriate interdental product for each mouth or interdental space, such as dental floss, interdental brush, flosser, interdental stick or oral irrigator, as well as acquiring the habit of cleaning between the teeth and integrating it into one’s daily oral hygiene routine from an early age, together with toothbrushing and the use of mouthwashes”, concludes Dr Joan Gispert, director of R&D&i at the DENTAID Research Center. The recommendation of the dentist or dental hygienist is key to using the right product for each need.

Study Methodology

These results are extracted from a quantitative study carried out by the consulting firm Hamilton and the DENTAID Research Center. A total of 7,169 people between the ages of 20 and 65 from Chile, Spain and the Netherlands participated in this study.
